StatusGator terminology glossary

This glossary explains the main terms you will see in the StatusGator account, settings, and help documentation.

Monitor

A service, website, server, or custom endpoint you track in StatusGator.

Types of monitors include:

  • Service monitor – Tracks an official provider status page (e.g., AWS, GitHub).
  • Website monitor – Checks if any website or API is available and responding.
  • Ping monitor – Tests if any server or host is reachable.
  • Custom monitor – Lets you manually create and update incidents for your own product or internal systems.

Board

Your main dashboard in StatusGator where you see all your monitors, their current statuses, and quick actions to manage them. You can think of a board like a project that contains a set of monitors used by a team or for a specific audience. Each board has one linked status page, and the number of boards you can create depends on your subscription plan.

Component

A specific part of a monitored service (e.g., an API, a database, a region).

You can choose to monitor all components or filter to only the ones that matter to you.

Component filter

A setting that allows you to limit monitoring and alerts to specific components of a service.

Filtering components helps reduce unnecessary alerts and focus on what matters most.

Status

The current health of a monitored service. StatusGator uses consistent, standardized terms across all monitors:

  • Up – Fully operational.
  • Warn – Confirmed minor outage or Possible outage (detected by StatusGator before official confirmation).
  • Down – Confirmed major outage.
  • Maintenance – Previously scheduled maintenance that is now in progress. (Shortened to "Maint" in some screens.)

Early Warning Signals

An alert generated by StatusGator when it detects unusual behavior or signs of an outage before the provider confirms it. These alerts appear as Warn with a question mark next to them on your board and status page.

Incident

An incident is something you create for a Custom Monitor on your board. Instead of us pulling this data from a provider, you are the provider and you specify the incident information. Incidents can be:

  • Major – Significant service impact.
  • Minor – Partial degradation.
  • Maintenance – Scheduled work by the provider.

Notifications

Alerts sent when the status of a monitored service changes.

Notification channels include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Discord, Webex, email, SMS, and webhooks.

Status page

A branded page that shows the status of your monitored services for a specific board.

  • Each board has one status page.
  • You can create public or private status pages.
  • Status pages can be embedded in websites, apps, or internal tools.

Subscribers

People who subscribe to your status page to receive notifications about incidents, maintenance, and updates.

Subscribers can be notified via email or other available channels, depending on your configuration.

Integration

A connection between StatusGator and another tool or platform.

Integration categories include:

  • Chat
  • Embeds
  • Help Desk
  • Incident Management
  • Monitoring

  • Status Ingestion
  • Status Pages
  • Advanced

Status ingestion

The process of importing service status data from private or non-public sources into your StatusGator account.

Options include iframe embed, status modal, and TV display.

An automated way to send StatusGator alerts or data to other tools or systems in real time.

An advanced integration (on custom plans only) that streams real-time incident data from all StatusGator service monitors to your systems for custom processing.
