Configure a custom monitor

After adding a custom monitor, you can update its settings to match your needs. Custom monitors are manually managed — you create incidents to reflect outages, warnings, or maintenance.

Open the configuration menu

  1. Go to Monitors from your left menu.
  2. Find the custom monitor you want to update.
  3. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) on the right side.
  4. Select Configure.

Available configuration options

General tab

  • Display Name – The name shown in your monitor list.
  • Description – Add a short description for internal context or for status page visitors. Once saved, the description appears as an info icon next to the monitor name – viewers can hover over it to read your note.
  • Group – Assign selected monitor to a group for better organization
  • Icon – Upload a custom PNG, JPG, WEBP, or GIF (up to 500KB).
  • Metadata – Add arbitrary key/value tags (e.g. team, owner, project). Included in API responses and webhook payloads.
  • Delete monitor – Remove the monitor if you no longer need it.

Remove a custom monitor

If you no longer need the monitor, you can:

  • Click Delete monitor at the bottom of the configuration screen, or
  • Go to the Monitors page, open the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the monitor, and select Delete Monitor.

Managing downtime with incidents

Custom monitors do not detect outages automatically. Instead, you manage them by creating incidents whenever downtime, degraded performance, or maintenance occurs.

  • Incidents communicate issues to your status page users directly.
  • Works best if you run your own service (e.g., SaaS platform, e-commerce site, or mobile application).
