What's the difference between Microsoft 365 Suite, Apps, and Web?

We often get asked which Microsoft services you should monitor to be alerted of Microsoft 365 outages. There are actually three different products on the Microsoft status page, and each one is used for different purposes.

Microsoft 365 suite

Microsoft’s broad Service Health category for shared Microsoft 365 infrastructure, portals, administration, authentication, and incidents that affect multiple Microsoft 365 products.

This category may include Microsoft 365 admin center and Office.com outages, regional access problems, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Defender, and incidents spanning services such as Teams, Exchange, and SharePoint.

It is not an all-in-one replacement for the individual Microsoft 365 services. We recommend monitoring Microsoft 365 suite together with the specific products your organization uses.

Microsoft 365 apps

Incidents affecting Microsoft 365 applications and related application-management functionality. This may include access to installed Office applications, application installation and downloads, activation, Office features, and cloud-connected functionality.

Microsoft has also historically published some Microsoft Intune, device-enrollment, Windows Autopilot, and endpoint-management incidents under this category.

Monitor the underlying cloud services, such as Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business, separately.

Microsoft 365 for the web

A narrow Service Health category for browser-based Office document experiences, such as opening and editing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files through a web browser.

Microsoft does not consistently place every Office.com or Office-for-the-web incident in this category. Some browser, portal, and document-access incidents are instead published under Microsoft 365 suite.

Organizations that rely on browser-based Office should monitor both Microsoft 365 for the web and Microsoft 365 suite, as well as SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business where applicable.
